Nagpur: Maharashtra CID will probe the disappearance of Mahatma Gandhi's spectacles from Sevagram Ashram in Wardha district, police said on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Prithiviraj Chavan had on Monday night said that Additional Secretary (Home) would conduct a probe into the issue but finally the state CID has been entrusted with the job, they said.

The round specs, kept in a glass covered box along with other personal belongings of the Father of the Nation at the Ashram, about 80 kms near Nagpur, was found missing on Monday by the Ashram management.

Though the specs are assumed to have been stolen by unidentified persons sometime back, Ashram authorities lodged a formal complaint with Wardha Police only after reports of its theft surfaced on Monday.
