KOZHIKODE: LDF convener Vaikkom Viswan has alleged that the state government is the prime accused in the present agriculture crisis that led to suicides of farmers in Wayanad. The CPM leader was talking to reporters after the visit of the LDF team to the houses of the deceased farmers on Sunday.“There is serious agriculture crisis in Wayanad but the UDF government tends to elude its responsibilities. Emergency action is the need of the hour, not speeches. Due to the feeling of guilt, they are alleging that the LDF is trying to celebrate suicides,” Vaikkom Viswan said.The LDF team demanded that the government should consider all loans taken by farmers as agriculture loans and take stringent action if cooperative banks are showing reluctance in providing bank loans to farmers. Necessary action should be taken to regulate microfinance institutions and the government should ensure mechanism for procurement of agriculture produce, LDF leaders said. Apart from Vaikkom Viswan, the LDF team comprised CPI leader and MP K E Ismayil, former minister N K Premachandran, A C Shanmukhadas, C K Nanu MLA, Ramachandran Kadannapally and P C Thomas.Leaders demanded that the government should provide job to one family member of deceased farmers. “Owing to financial debts, these families are in deep crisis. At least a job for one member is essential to survive. Besides, the government should sponsor the education of children of the deceased farmers Varghese of Thrikkeppatta and Ashokan of Pulpally,” leaders pointed out.
