Bangalore: The state government had asked all temples under the Muzrai Department to conduct special poojas and homas on Friday and next Thursday to “get good rains”. It had also announced Rs 17 crore for this. But poor planning by the government resulted in most of the temples not performing these special poojas.
In several places, a delay in sending out proper communication meant the temples could not make preparations for the poojas. Many Deputy Commissioners’ offices did not receive the government order till Friday morning. When the district officials contacted the Endowment Department, they were told that they would receive a circular through fax soon. But many did not receive any circular till evening.
There were no special poojas in a majority of the temples covered by the Endowment Department in Gulbarga, Davangere, Bidar, Koppal, Yadgir, Shimoga and Chamarajanagar districts. In Hassan district, regular poojas were conducted in several temples in view of the Varamahalakshmi festival.
Only officials in Raichur received the circular at 11. 30 am, which asked the temples to perform special poojas and homas by spending up to `5,000 from their temple funds. In Belgaum, poojas could not be performed in several temples as they had no money with them. They had been asked to send expenditure details to the department for reimbursement.
The government order also prescribed special poojas with parjanya japa, homa, varun mantra japa and jalabhisheka to the presiding deity of each temple. Due to the delay, many temples in Davangere could conduct only normal poojas. The government order posed another problem for many temples in Belgaum, Bijapur and Bagalkot districts. The priests in those temples did not know how to conduct parjanya japa and homas.
