A Kerala court on Wednesday convicted businessman Mohammed Nisham of mowing down a security guard with his Hummer. The quantum of punishment will be announced on Thursday.
The prosecution has demanded Rs 5 crore compensation for the victim, Chandrabose. The prosecution has also sought maximum punishment for the convict, arguing that the verdict should be a model for everyone.
However, the defence argued that maximum punishment should not be awarded as Nisham hails from a joint family, members of which are dependent on him.
Md Nisham, who runs a successful beedi business in Kerala, reportedly owns several luxury cars like Rolls Royce and Bentley. He has also expanded into jewellery business.
There are as many as 12 criminal cases currently on Nisham in Kerala.
In August, five policemen, including a sub inspector and constables, were suspended for showing favour towards Nisham.
The police officials were suspended as they allowed Nisham to meet his family and also have food in a luxury hotel, which amounts to showing favour to an accused. The officials have been suspended pending enquiry.
The security guard, Chandrabose, was mowed down by Nisham's Hummer in January last year, following which he succumbed to his injuries.
