The seven men, who barged into the room of a hotel room in Karnataka and thrashed an interfaith couple, have been charged with rape. According to the police, the woman who was reportedly in the room with her companion has alleged that the men took her to a forest and raped her.
Accusing the men of forcefully entering the room, the woman on Thursday released a video in which she stated that the men took turns to rape her, NDTV reported.
She further alleged that after raping her in the forest, the attackers forced her into a car and drove her around the city. “The driver also raped me,” the woman was heard saying in the video.
“They later dropped me at a bus stop. I want them to be punished,” she added.
3 Arrested So Far
Informing about the allegations of the woman, Haveri Superintendent of Police Anshu Kumar said that the police weren’t informed about the rape earlier and got to know about it through a media report. “We weren’t told about rape earlier. We came to know about this only through media reports about the video by the woman. We have booked a case under the appropriate section,” Kumar was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
“The victim’s statement has been recorded under 164 of the CrPC after producing her before the magistrate. She has accused seven people in her statement. Three of them have already been arrested. One is in the hospital. The other three are on the run. We will arrest the remaining accused as well,” Haveri SP added.
As per the police, the Muslim woman, who is married, was in a relationship with the man she was found with in the hotel.
Interfaith Couple Attacked
A group of men barged into a hotel room and thrashed an interfaith couple who were staying there in Karnataka’s Haveri district. The incident took place on January 7. The matter came to light after the victims narrated their ordeal to the police, and registered a case against the accused. Several videos of the assault, filmed by the attackers themselves, have also emerged on social media.
The videos show six men, reportedly from a minority community, were seen knocking on the room of the lodge in Hanagal Taluk of Haveri District. When the door was opened by a man, they barged in and headed straight to the woman. The gang verbally abused the couple and filmed the woman while she was trying to cover her face with burqa.
In a similar case, seven men were arrested for beating up two cousins in Belagavi on January 9 after mistaking them for an interfaith couple. The attackers continued to beat up the boy and the girl even after they said they were cousins.
