Western Ghats Task Force Chairman Anant Hegde Ashisara has disclosed that the process of declaring Kappatagudda bio-diversity area in Gadag district as conservation reserve is in the final stages and the formal declaration will be made soon.
He told reporters here on Sunday that the hazardous activities like illegal mining could be curtailed once Kappatagudda was declared conservation reserve.
Ashisara also disclosed that the task force was contemplating sending proposals to the state government to declare other areas such as Chintanapalli in Koppal district and basins of Seeta river which flows in Chikmagalur and Udupi districts, and Lakshmana Teertha, a tributary of river Cauvery as conservation reserves.
He said, with the number of incidents of wild animals entering the human habitats was increasing, the task force had proposed to link the crop insurance scheme to cover the loss of crops due to wild animals.
Ashisara said the task force which had already introduced the special alternative fuel scheme for the tribal communities in Bisilkoppa village in Sirsi taluk was exploring potential of promoting income generation activities for the tribal and the forest dwellers.
“It has been planned to help tribal families to generate income through wild flowers and wild fruits,” he said.
