THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Cross-check the phone calls and circle of friends your teenage boy maintains. The Thiruvananthapuram city police, while probing into the murder of a gangster in the city, has come across startling revelations from criminals and gangs that organised syndicates are luring college students into the grim pastures of crime.  Peroorkada CI V Jayachandran has confirmed that the investigation so far into the murder of gangster Kannadi Shaji has revealed the involvement of students in the criminal network. On Friday, the investigation team nabbed a law student from his college in Bangalore. In addition to this, it is almost confirmed that another engineering student from the city would soon be apprehended in connection with the case. The statistics of the students who were charged for their involvement in criminal cases are alarmingly on the rise. In the  murder of Ranjith, a local RSS leader, at Mannanthala, four engineering students were arrested. The charge-sheet of the case is yet to be filed. But the biggest shocker came when the special team questioned several gangsters in connection with Kannadi Shaji murder. Though inter-gang rivalry has been reduced drastically after the kingpins have initiated reconciliation efforts to mend the rough patch between the warring gangs, that has not diminished the recruitment drive being carried out by gangsters in the city-based colleges. It is learnt that during an interrogation of a gangster, notorious in the name of Veli Pappan, it was revealed that more than a hundred students are currently operating under him. Many of them are aged between 18 and 23 years and studying in various institutions in the city.
