A 45-year-old tribal was killed by a wild elephant at Vadivelampalayam near Alandurai on the outskirts of the city in the wee hours of Saturday.
According to Forest officials, Kuppan alias Kuppusamy of Thoppampalayam, who worked as a security guard in a grove near Vadivelampalayam in Boluvampatti forest range.
A wild elephant, which had missed its herd, was wandering in Boluvampatti range. While searching for its herd, it had come near the grove around 3 am on Saturday.
When Kuppusamy tried to chase the animal into the forest, it attacked and killed him on the spot. Meanwhile his wife Saraswathi, who was also present there, had a miraculously escape. from the attack.
Following information, Forest officials rushed to the spot, recovered his body and sent it to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
Later, a team of personnel from Boluvampatty forest range drove the elephant back into the forest on by bursting crackers.
The operation started in the early hours of Saturday and ended by evening.
