On the contrary, the announcement made by her that the relief amount for the families of advocates would be increased to Rs 5.25 lakh, irrespective of the service period, has been hailed by the legal fraternity, a fact that Karunanidhi was not able to digest, she said. The CM said that on April 24, 2010, Karunanidhi announced that he would increase the relief for families of lawyers from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Subsequently, at the fag end of his tenure, an order was issued stating that based on the tenure of their registration under the welfare fund, the kin of lawyers who die would get an amount between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 5 lakh. But, the fact that no information on funding for this decision was attached indicated that the order was issued with an intention of not implementing it. “Advocates registered in this scheme only from 1991. The truth is that if the order had been implemented after bringing necessary changes to the law, the families of only those lawyers who die after April 2021 would get the amount of Rs 5 lakh. No lawyer has benefited from this order,” she pointed out, adding that even the Tamil Nadu Bar Council asked the government to retract the order. The CM said her order has set right the discrepancies. Currently, families of all those who have registered under the Welfare Fund Act would get, in case of the lawyer passing away, an amount of Rs 5.25 lakh irrespective of the period since registration. A sum of up to Rs 4 crore is being allocated for this as subsidy annually. “There is no falsehood in my decision in increasing the amount from Rs 2 lakh to Rs  5.25 lakh,” she said, flaying Karunanidhi for trying to “hoodwink” the President, Governor and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by making a DMK functionary write a letter claiming she had made a false statement during the  HC’s 150th year celebrations.first published:September 15, 2012, 10:18 ISTlast updated:September 15, 2012, 10:18 IST
