HYDERABAD: In normal course, mining magnate Gali Janardhan Reddy would be surrounded by top notch industrialists and politicians. In short, the high and the mighty 24/7. But within a day, the world of the former Karnataka minister has turned upside down.Janardhan Reddy is now an under-trial prisoner No 697 and his brother-in-law and Obulapuram Mining Company MD BV Srinivas Reddy is prisoner No 696 at the Chanchalguda Central Prison. Both have been lodged in the same barrack where those accused of murders, rapes and other petty offences are held.Sources in the prisons department told Express that Janardhan Reddy and Srinivas Reddy spent Monday night in the barrack of the reception block and slept on the floor along with other under-trial prisoners. “That is the case with any under-trial. He has to sleep on the floor on a bedsheet provided by us, however powerful he may be. The rules are the same for everyone, right from Gali Janardhan Reddy to the accused in other offences,” the sources said.According to them, the high-profile duo couldn’t sleep well and woke up around 5.30 a.m. They had khichdi for breakfast. Last night, for dinner, they were given rice, dal and a vegetable curry but they chose not to have it and instead, had fruits and biscuits. As per rules, 600 grams of rice, 100 grams of dal and 250 grams of vegetable curry are served to the under-trial prisoners. It is learnt that Janardhan Reddy and Srinivas Reddy hit the bed early on Monday night, tired as they were, following their journey from Bellary to the jail. Janardhan Reddy and Srinivas Reddy are likely to apply for special class prisoner status. If approved, they may get better facilities inside the Chanchalguda Central Prison like former chairman of Satyam Computers Ramalinga Raju.“But that may take a while as there are procedures involved,” an official said, adding that they have no other option till then.
