CHENNAI: The artistic talents of the members of RASA came to the fore when the cultural organisation joined hands with the Lions Club of South Madras for a three-day Aadi Youth Festival of music, dance and drama. With professional performers taking the stage on the first two days, the festival also welcomed a special youth programme titled Vande Mataram, by differently-abled students from nine special schools on day 3, August 15. Dancer, teacher and choreographer, Ambika Kameshwar, the founder of RASA, believes that theatre can be used as a technique to reach out to the challenged children. “Such theatre performances can help them learn mobility, improve their listening skill and speak like normal people,” says Ambika. Students from various special schools performed music and dance related to Independence Day. Dressed in white, holding the Tricolour, the students danced to A R Rahaman’s Vande Matram. Also, Fourees, the special theatre group of RASA, presented a small skit on freedom fighters. According to Ambika, challenged children are god’s favourites and even more talented than normal people. Sharing love and care is not enough to help them, but we have to teach them and also cure their disability. Some other schools that were a part of the occasion included Clarke’s School, Downs Syndrome Welfare Association, Heartism – Lotus Foundation, Vidya Sagar, Spastics Society of Tamil Nadu, Vijya Human Services, Pathway – Centre for Rehabilitation and Education of the mentally retarded.
