Italian PM inks accords to boost trade
India and Italy have already been signed several bilateral trade agreements after the talks between Prodi and Singh.

New Delhi: Visiting Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi says he wants to establish strategic relations with India.

Prodi, who is in Delhi, is heading a 400-member business delegation – the biggest ever to visit India.

Prodi, who arrived in India on February 10, has since visited Mumbai to address a gathering of the captains of industry and Kolkata to attend the Italia-India 2007 business forum organised by FICCI.

Prodi was given a ceremonial reception at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday morning, after which he visited Rajghat and placed a wreath on the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Italian Prime Minister also met Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Wednesday.

Italy wants to boost bilateral trade from over $4 billion at present to $10 billion by 2009.

India and Italy have already been signed several bilateral trade agreements after the talks between Prodi and Singh, aimed at facilitating greater cooperation between the business chambers of the two countries.
