Ahmedabad: The special CBI court on Saturday allowed the applications of two police officers, who are accused in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, seeking modification of their bail conditions which bar them from leaving Gujarat.
Judge Geeta Gopi allowed the pleas of IPS officers GL Singhal and Anaju Chaudhary, though CBI opposed it saying they may abscond if allowed go outside Gujarat or tamper with evidence.
But advocate Brijrajsinh Jhala, the accused officers' lawyer, submitted that they were not seeking to leave the country and most witnesses in the case are police officers who live in Gujarat.
Ishrat Jahan, Javed Sheikh, Zeeshan Johar and Amjad Ali Rana were killed by a team of the city crime branch on Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar road on June 15, 2004. According to CBI, it was a fake encounter.
Singhal was reinstated in service in May this year as a group commandant in the State Reserve Police.
