While the world swoons over renowned musical artists, attending their concerts, many local artists from interior regions have talent that rivals those of established artists. These artists just need a platform to showcase their skills which can help them attain fame. One of such many local artists is 57-year-old Balasubramanian from Thanjavur. Balasubramanian resides in Ellaiamman Koli Street in the Krishnarayar Sandhu area of Thanjavur and has a unique ability that sets him apart in the world of music. Not only does he have expertise in playing different instruments but he is also able to mimic the sounds of different instruments vocally

Balasubramanian began his musical journey in 1991, enrolling himself at the Thiruvaiyaru Government Music College, from where he earned a diploma in Mridangam. It marked the beginning of a celebrated career. He has developed a remarkable ability to mimic the sounds of various rhythm instruments using only his voice. His vocal skills are so refined that he can replicate the sounds of instruments like the Thavil, Mridangam, Kanjira, Mukharsing, Violin, Saxophone, Konnakol, and Veena. Without the use of any actual instruments, he can produce sounds that are nearly indistinguishable from the original, captivating audiences with his performances.

This unique ability did not go unnoticed. Renowned Thavil artist Arithuvaramangalam A.K. Palanivel, impressed by Balasubramanian’s vocal prowess, introduced him to the world of vocal-instrumental music, allowing him to showcase his talent on a larger stage. Since then, for over 30 years, Balasubramanian has been mesmerising audiences with his voice, performing at various stage events and temple festivals.

Over the years, he has received numerous certificates of appreciation and a few awards from both government bodies and various organizations. Despite the recognition he has received, many believe that Balasubramanian deserves even greater honour. Musicians and art enthusiasts alike feel that both the central and state governments should acknowledge his exceptional talent with a prestigious award.
