New Delhi Mumbai's Income Tax department has arrested one of the touts selling benami PAN cards. He has been handed over to the Mumbai police. The other person is still absconding. CNN-IBN had reported on how fake PAN cards were being issued to people without proper identification documents.
It was found that there are many touts who are selling this unique identity to anyone who has Rs 500 to spare. And the entire process is followed without any verification.
According to section 114 of the income tax act, one needs to provide various documents as identity proofs for getting a pan card but only photocopies are adequate.
The Government has been pushing PAN cards as a source to track investments and income of every Indian citizen.
They are needed for almost every purchase, including loans, opening demat accounts and as an identity proof for passports. Therefore, the damage a dubious PAN card can do is unimaginable.
