To create awareness on pollution caused by animal farming and its effects on climate change, the Indian Youth Climate Network (IYCN) with Humane Society International (India) is organizing “food in focus,” a three-month long national video competition. The IYCN is an NGO with a network of young people in 18 states of India who work to create awareness about India’s role in global debate on climate change. The NGO organizes youth summits on environment issues and climate change, environmental audit for corporations, campaigns for clean energy and water, and waste management.Speaking to Express, Chaitanya Kumar, national coordinator of IYCN said, the NGO is organizing the competition to make people aware of the pollution caused by livestock farming and its relation to the food we eat. “People know that cars and factories pollute the environment, but very few of them are aware of how animal farming increases GHG emissions,” he said.According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization report, animal farming contributes to 18 per cent of global, human-induced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The theme for the short film competition is to spread awareness on food sources and its impact on the environment. The closing date for entries is July 31. Judges for the competition are Amala Akkineni, an animal welfare activist, N Jayasimha, campaign manager at Humane Society International and Chaitanya, IYCN national coordinator. “We are expecting around 30 videos,” Chaitanya said. Winners will be given prizes worth Rs 50, 000. Anyone above 18 years of age is eligible to participate and can apply as a group or an individual. The videos can be submitted in any Indian language but should have English subtitles. Every participant’s work must be original and should not have been published elsewhere. Participants are not allowed to post or share any of the videos created for the IYCN contest, prior to the official launch of the winning video.
