Los Angeles: Pop diva Madonna wants to be like Mahatma Gandhi, the champion of truth and non-violence.
"I want to be like Gandhi, Martin Luther King and John Lennon but I also want to stay alive," she said during a Valentine's Day interview on Sirius Satellite Radio.
Madonna, who recently upset church leaders by enacting a controversial crucifixion scene on her most recent tour, has some even bigger spiritual shoes to fill, according to Hollywood.TV. "For me, we all need to be Jesus in our time," she said.
Defending video images she used of AIDS orphans in Africa, Madonna said: "Jesus' message was to love your neighbour as yourself, and these are people in need. I hope that people got that message. Of course, some people thought 'Oh, she's just being controversial, she's just getting on a cross and trying to piss people off,' but that wasn't my intention at all."
Talking about her connection to gay fans, saying, "Gay men are perfect for girls who are tough and aren't threatened by strong women. They're usually in touch with their feelings and pay attention to details. I've always had an affinity with gay men."
