Huge haul of ketamine at airport

A considerable amount of ketamine was left in a bag headed for the luggage bay of a Malaysian airlines flight to Kuala Lumpur on Monday. However, rather strangely, the would-be smugglers abandoned the bag and exited from the airport before the discovery was made - giving rise to speculation that they were possibly low-level couriers.

CISF personnel discovered and seized the bag containing around 18 kg of the contraband in the international terminal of the Chennai Airport. CISF officials estimated that the street price of the seized ketamine, used in veterinary practice as an anaesthetic and illegally as a party drug, was worth around `1.8 crore. They were unable to trace the owner of the bag.

“The passenger who brought the bag probably panicked just before the security check,” a CISF officer said. Ketamine hydrochloride is often smuggled out of the country as it is a popular party drug in South East Asian countries.
