CUTTACK: The death of a 65-year-old woman and another woman giving birth to a stillborn child at the gates of the City Hospital due to alleged negligence by the staff in June this year has drawn the attention of the Orissa Human Rights Commission, which is set to probe the cases. The Commission has directed the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Cuttack, to submit a report on both the incidents within four weeks. The Commission has also asked the petitioner advocate Subrat Mohapatra to submit documents and materials within the stipulated period. The City Hospital, though under the direct supervision of the CDMO, has plunged to the depths in recent times thanks to the apathy in rendering proper health care services to the ailing. Though the hospital is the first refuge of the poorer sections, they are being harassed. The goings on in the district headquarter hospital had caused a furore in June when a woman delivered a stillborn baby at its gates on 27th of the month after allegedly being refused admission. Joharan Bibi had been taken to the hospital after complaining of severe stomach pain. When they reached there in the afternoon, they reportedly found the main gate locked. After a lot of noise, they were taken in through the side door where the doctor examined her and advised ultrasound along with medicines. As she was going out, she slumped at the gate and delivered the baby. While the doctors denied any neglect stating that there was no outward sign of pregnancy and Bibi herself was not aware of it, within 24 hours the hospital was again at the centre of another storm. A 65-year-old woman K Satyabhama died in the hospital on June 28. According to her kin, she was not attended properly by the doctors. Stung by the two deaths, the then Collector KK Mohanty had directed an inquiry into the incidents at the level of the CDMO.
