A retired high-ranking BHEL official in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal was deceived by a honeytrap gang, which extorted a substantial sum of money from him. The gang lured the officer under the pretext of meeting a Russian woman. During his stay at a hotel, they recorded 27 compromising videos involving the officer and the woman, subsequently using these videos to blackmail him.
The threats of making the videos public led the officer to pay over Rs 1 crore to the scammers. The gang initially invited him to the hotel where they filmed the videos and then began blackmailing him based on the recordings. One member of the gang, posing as a crime branch officer, further extorted money by threatening him with arrest.
Frustrated by the continuous threats, the officer filed a complaint with the police. Authorities soon launched an investigation and are actively searching for the suspects, including the Russian woman involved in the scheme.
Instances of honeytraps are frequently surfacing across different regions in the country. This scheme involves a gang that ensnares individuals, blackmailing them with compromising images or videos. Despite numerous similar cases coming to light, people continue to fall prey to these scams.
