Strangely, Hollywood does not seem to inspire as much adulation in our actors as it does in our actresses and directors. If the directors want recognition in the shape of an Oscar, the actresses want their acting abilities recognised. Umm, isn't it funny, that despite being in (one of) the biggest movie making/producing industries and given the sheer number of movies made, Bollywood (and the regional film industry) is not enough to prove abilities? Acting ones.
Mallika Sherawat went from being Reema Lamba to Brigitte Bardot with a single Cannes appearance and of course the nearly-popping, gravity-defying outfit. And Shilpa Shetty! While a Big Brother made her the beautiful, graceful, etc, etc, epitome of the Indian woman; it's not long before Hollywood will line up outside her house with film offers. Or at least that's what her PR agents will tell you (and me). Though I wonder if - after the Richard Gere-shall-we-dance-kiss episode - Shilpa will be able to say no to kissing scenes.
And she is not even Aishwarya Bachchan nee Rai. She handled it so well, the no-kissing clause in all the Hollywood movies she was supposed to be doing before AB Jr happened to her. Mrs Bee's first kissing scene (the Hrithik-Dhoom 2 liplock?) came quickly alongside the 'rumours' that she (then Rai) was romantically engaged to AB Jr. Right after her wedding, we saw some pictures of her emerging from a river in a see-through, wet outfit for a Russian film.
Apparently, the release of the film was delayed - it was scheduled for an April release - when the makers were requested to postpone their release to August, keeping in mind the Ash-Abhi wedding. And ah, the wet-Ash scene apparently shows her posterior... she could not, allegedly, say no to the scene as it was a foreign film. Ah, and hadn't she refused some Bond film because she had to kiss?
First Ash said she won't kiss. Then she said no skin show. Now we have both. She also said no nude scenes. Hmmm.... Maybe now that she is married and if her husband does not object? Or maybe if she 'could not' say no to one scene, there might be more... And c'mon, as a Bachchan, we won't judge her, will we? It's artistic license.
Afterthought: Tanushree Dutta - who apparently refused to make love to Jimmy Shergill, erm, on screen! -should take tips from Mrs Bee on how to say something and then backtrack without batting an eyelid. That's it. I am going to Hollywood. I have had it with working in the Indian industries and not being recognised for all that I can do. Just like poor, pretty Celina Jaitley's acting abilities had so far been ignored in Bollywood. So Hollywood, Celina and me are on our way. After all it's the only place where "talent is recognised", "people are professional" and you get a chance to "prove your mettle" as an actress or a script-writer.
