The Temple of Konark and Shree Jagannath Temple are one of the most popular temples in India witnessing over lakhs of visitors every year. Similarly, Vasudeva Swami Perumal Temple situated in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh is over 700 years old and carries the same significance among Hindu devotees. It is about seven hundred years old. The architecture of the temple was inspired by the Kalinga style. The idol in the temple is similar to Tirumala Srinivasa and is made in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. In some aspects, this temple reminds of the Jagannath Temple of Puri while in other aspects it reminds the viewers of the temple of Konarak. Citing the resemblance to Tamil culture, Vasudeva Perumal Swamy Temple is located in Mandasa village of Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh.
Mandasa village, located at a distance of 94 km from Srikakulam, earlier, was known as Manjusha meaning jewellery box. Aware of the history of this temple, Chinna Jeeyar Swamy came to Vasudeva Perumal Swamy Temple in 1988 and started efforts to restore the temple to its former glory. The Swami repaired the temple with special care during the centenary celebrations of Pedda Jeeyar Swamiji–his guru. It was the place where his guru completed his studies.
Despite its hundreds of years of antiquity, the temple has been reconstructed without any damage to the sculptural Chathuryam. The dilapidated temple was completely restored and rededicated in February 2009.
In the past, the colonists here were blamed for their Brahmanicide at this temple. They decided to build a temple to get rid of the old tradition of Brahmahatya. Following, an idol of Vasudeva Perumal was made in Kanchipuram. It was brought and enshrined in this temple.
Hanuman is the ruler of Vasudeva Perumal Swamy Kshetra. Every year Brahmotsavams are held in the first week of Maghamas which is observed in February and March. Thousands of devotees visit this temple on the occasion of Brahmotsavams.
