Justice Das becomes the second non-Muslim holding Pakistan's top judicial post after Justice A R Cornelius.

New Delhi: With Justice Rana Bhagwan Das becoming the first member of the Hindu community to head the country's apex court, the Hindus in Pakistan have expressed their happiness but caution that it does not mean he will be able to solve their "problems".

After Justice A R Cornelius, a Christian who served as the Chief Justice of Pakistan from 1960 to 1968, 64-year-old Das became the second non-Muslim holding Pakistan's top judicial post, as he took over as the Acting Chief Justice on Saturday.

"We are defintely happy with his appointment, but he cannot solve the problems of the Hindu community which is actually the responsibility of the government," former Pakistan Peoples Party Member of National Assembly (MNA) Dr Khtoomal was quoted as saying by the Pak dailly The Daily Times on Saturday.

According to him, the Consitution provides equal rights to every citizen but unfortunately this has not been the case for Hindu citizens who have been "ignored" on many fronts.

Gianchand, a businessman from Sindh province, which has a large number of Hindu population, welcomed the appointment but said it was a "shame" that he was only appointed to the top post during a judicial crisis.

Larkana-based lawyer Kalpana Devi also appreciated the government's decision but cautioned that the Hindu community should not expect that he would necessarily solve their problems, the report said.

Tharparkar-based journalist Surrenadar V Alasai took this point a step further, saying a Hindu judge would have certain reservations while addressing issues relating to the community.
