Mumbai: Newcomer Alia Bhatt, daughter of renowned filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, says she prefers to consult her mentor Karan Johar regarding her career over her family.

Johar had launched Alia with 'Student of the Year' last year.

"Karan is like my mentor. He has given birth to me when it comes to getting into this industry. So every decision that I make, I do consult him. He obviously wants me to take my own decisions. He wants me to make mistakes and learn. He is a very important part of my life and career," Alia told PTI in

an interview here.

Alia, who is the sister of actor-turned-director Pooja Bhatt and cousin of actor Emraan Hashmi, says she doesn't take any acting tips from them.

"I don't take advice on acting but I do ask them about a film or what I should do or how I should behave. I do talk about these things. But I don't take acting tips from them," she said.

Though her father has a production company, Alia decided not to start her acting career with the Bhatt camp. Not only her debut film, but even her upcoming projects 'Highway' and '2 States' - are not from Vishesh Films (Bhatt camp).

"For my first film I had decided not to start off with our family banner. I was more than excited to do 'Student of the Year' with Karan. But now if something comes up (from Vishesh Films) then I will definitely look into it," she said.

Alia will be seen next in Imtiaz Ali's directorial venture 'Highway' where she is paired opposite Randeep Hooda. The film, a road trip, will see the two characters travelling to different places.

"I am more than happy to work with Imtiaz Ali in 'Highway' as he has been on my wish list of directors. I have finished one long schedule. It is emotional and physically draining, but it is all in a positive sense. It is amazing to work on

the film and I feel like I want to work on and on...I don't want to stop shooting for it," she said.

Her other film is Karan Johar-Sajid Nadiadwala's joint production venture '2 States'. The film is based on the novel with the same name, written by noted author Chetan Bhagat. The film is set to be released on April 18 next year and will see Alia romancing Arjun Kapoor.

"I have '2 States', which is a Dharma Production's film. I feel I am at home. My director Abhishek Varman is a very good friend, so working with him is not only exciting but also fun. I can connect with him very easily. And working with Arjun is again a lot of fun. I am having a great time doing this film,"

she said.

Alia has also been signed as the brand ambassador for cosmetic brand Maybelline and is quite happy to be associated with it.

"I think now-a-days it is important for celebrities to endorse a product. It is a part and parcel of your profile. Acting in advertisement is part of your job and profession. It is a little more exciting than doing a film.

"In a film you play a character, living another life, but when you sign a brand you are living that commodity. It is a different space and it is fun to be a part of it," she added.
