BHUBANESWAR: Apart from the handicapped people, it is the elderly persons in society who are a marginalised lot, said Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena. Inaugurating an Age Care Service Hub here, the Mayor said that special attention was needed by the civil society to address the problems and needs of elderly persons who are shunned by their family members. He added that the Age Care centre would act as a platform to help the elderly people, especially the women and the handicapped, overcome the feeling of loneliness they experience after being deserted by their children. The centre has been set up by the HelpAge India, a philanthropic organisation, on its premises at Nayapalli. Aim behind the centre is to provide physiotherapy treatment, geriatric counselling, recreational facilities including indoor games, library facilities and aids and appliances. A trained physiotherapist has also been appointed at the centre to provide round-the-clock services. Sources with the organisation said besides this, one can take the help of a toll free helpline 1800-345-1253 for addressing issues of elderly people and rescue and rehabilitation works as and when required. State head of HelpAge India Rashmi Mohanty said the organisation had been working for the cause and care of the elderly persons. Members of senior citizens association were present.
