Hate speech leads to violence in Malda, BJP MLA arrested
The attack on Kaliachak police station took place on Sunday, when a minority organisation organised a protest rally against Hindu Mahasabha leader Kamlesh Tiwari for making derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad.

Malda (West Bengal): A BJP MLA Shamik Bhattacharya along with 10 others has been arrested in Malda in West Bengal on Wednesday in connection with in the case of a mob attacking a police station in the Kaliachak area on Sunday.

The attack on Kaliachak police station took place on Sunday, when a minority organisation Anjuman Ahle Sunnatul Jamat (AJS) organised a protest rally against Hindu Mahasabha leader Kamlesh Tiwari for making derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad.

Sources said, Bhattacharya was arrested from Rathbari in Malda town as a preventive measure to thwart further escalation in the already tensed area.

The situation remained tense in the areas and the Rapid Action Force has been called in to take stock of the situation.
