Aamir Khan's Fanaa may not release in Gujarat, thanks to some strong statements he made against the state government.

Ahmedabad: Bollywood actor Aamir Khan may disappoint his fans in Gujarat, thanks to some strong statements he has made against the Gujarat Government related to the Vadodara riots.

Aamir Khan's latest film Fanaa will not be screened at any of the multiplexes in Gujarat.

The decision was taken by the Gujarat Multiplex Owners Association.

“Multiplexes across Gujarat will not screen Fanaa which will hit theatres this Friday," Manubhai S Patel, the president of multiplex association of Gujarat said.

Patel, who is also the chairman of city-based multiplex Wide Angle, said some of the multiplexes in Gujarat had to stop the screening of Aamir Khan's film Rang De Basanti mid-way after an agitation against the actor over his remarks in connection with the Narmada dam intensified.

Twenty-two multiplexes across the state have decided to not screen the film.

Fanaa's producer Yash Chopra had in fact traveled to Gandhinagar and met chief minister Narendra Modi a few days ago to speak to him about the controversy and how it will impact the film.

Earlier partner, City Pulse Multiplexes, Ashok Purohit had told CNN-IBN, "Keeping public sentiment against Aamir Khan in mind, we have decided not to screen Fanaa. However, I feel that Yash Chopra is being victimised in this whole process. So if people realise this fact, then we might be able to show the film."

The actor, in an interactive interview to BBC Asian Network, had slammed the Narendra Modi government for their failure to control the violence in Vadodara.

Aamir Khan's Rang De Basanti had also been taken off the screens when he had spoken in favour of the Narmada Bachao Andolan.

BJP spokesperson in Gujarat, Yamal Vyas had said, "We will certainly oppose screening of the movie in Gujarat and will continue to oppose it until he apologises. Aamir Khan must realise that innocent people are killed in Kashmir everyday too."

The film stars Kajol, Tabu and Rishi Kapoor apart from Aamir Khan.

However, hardcore Aamir fans are still keeping their fingers crossed and hoping the controversy sorts itself out and that they get to see the star first day first show.
