PUDUCHERRY: Radhakrishnan, a hydrogeologist with Puducherry’s ground water unit, has said that the ground water level in the Union Territory has depleted alarmingly because of overutilisation. Addressing an interactive session organised by the Puducherry chapter of the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) on Friday, he said the ground water level has further gone down by 15 to 35 metres in different parts of the UT where there is heavy consumption of ground water. As a result, he said, several places along coastal areas had sea water intrusions. He said the government had taken steps to reduce exploitation and ground water potential was being assessed every five years. He added that efforts were being taken to rejuvenate water bodies like lakes and ponds that had been neglected. Radhakrishanan said a level-two plus laboratory, with the assistance of the World Bank, was being set up to assess water quality in Puducherry.
