Manavalan (32), the VCK functionary, was attacked with knives by a gang near a teashop at Sonampalaym. According to police, Manavalan, a Puducherry Municipality workshop driver who got married three months ago, died on the spot. He had returned home after a pilgrimage to Velankanni on Thursday morning. The police said the gang members later went to Manavalan’s house in Dubrayapet and attacked one of his relatives, Nagamuthu (48). He was admitted to GH. Police suspected previous enmity as the cause behind Manavalan’s death. Odiansalai police registered a case against 14 persons, including Rajasekar of Vampakeerapalayam and Kulla Saravanan. Both the accused had cases pending against them. Further investigations were on. Meanwhile the VCK activists staged a road blockade near the Saraswathi Kalyana Mandapam, close to the Odiansalai Police Station, here on Friday morning. They demonstrators demanded the arrest of the culprits in the case. Police held talks with the agitators following which the blockade was withdrawn. AIADMK legislator of the Uppalam constituency visited the protesting VCK activists. He also condemned the murder. Police pickets had been posted at Dubrayapet area to avoid any further escalation in tension. The UT police had been in the face of a storm after the recent bomb attack that killed a history sheeter, Jegan. In another bomb attack, a child received injuries.
