New Delhi: The Central Government will move a petition in the Supreme Court against its stay on the OBC quota in a day or two.
Armed with the backing on the states on the issue, HRD Minister Arjun Singh made this announcement on Wednesday.
“Whatever has to be done should be done quickly. Our law officers are deciding on the petition that will be filed in the Supreme Court either tomorrow or day after tomorrow," Singh was quoted as saying after the two-day conference of State Education Ministers.
Singh also said the states were in complete agreement that the 27 per cent reservation for OBCs decided on by the Centre should be implemented from the coming academic session.
"The state ministers said they want the Centre to try and get the interim order of the Court vacated without getting into any confrontation with the Court," he said.
The Supreme Court had on March 29 stayed the controversial provision in the Parliamentary law enabling 27 per cent quota for OBCs, holding that data based on a 76-year-old census could not be the determinative factor for the affirmative action.
Supreme Court's stay on the OBC quota had come as a setback to the UPA.
After its allies and even opposition parties asked for government to do something about the stay, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had met his allies and opposition leaders to work out a strategy. The Supreme Court will give a final judgement in the third week of August.
