New Delhi: Google is helping people track the missing after a 8.9-magnitude earthquake that triggered a 13-foot tsunami that washed away cars and tore away buildings along the coast near the epicentre.
The online tool 'Person Finder: 2011 Japan Earthquake' helps keep track of missing people hit by the earthquake and the subsequent tsunami.
The tool on Google's Appspot service launched soon after the earthquake struck the island nation.
The Person Finder for the Japan Earthquake lets users search for a missing person and also allows users to post information about someone. Websites can also embed Google Person Finder as a gadget on their own pages.
Google Person Finder, a project of the Google Crisis Response division of Google.org, was built by Google engineers in response to the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti to help those affected by the earthquake connect with their loved ones. Google Person Finder can also accept data from other similar registries and display them together at one place.
The service is powered by individual users who update and remove records when no longer relevant. It was also active during the recent New Zealand earthquake and also the 2010 Pakistan and Brazil floods.
