New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday sanctioned Rs two lakh each for the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the building collapse in Ghatkopar in Mumbai.

He also approved Rs 50,000 each for those injured in the building collapse, the PMO said.

Seventeen people were killed when a four-storey residential building collapsed in suburban Ghatkopar on July 25.

Police had arrested local Shiv Sena worker Sunil Shitap for carrying out illegal structural changes in his ground-floor flats which allegedly led to the collapse.

The residents of the Sai Darshan building in suburban Ghatkopar had also met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and demanded strict punishment for the culprits.

An official from the chief minister's office had said the residents also told Fadnavis about their rehabilitation requirements.

"The chief minister assured them of all necessary action, and directed the housing department to provide them with temporary shelter," the official said.

Fadnavis had also announced in Legislative Council that the kin of those killed in the incident will be given ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh each.
