With Ganesh Chaturthi just around the corner, devotees are eager to welcome Bappa home. This year, the 10-day festival will begin on September 7 and go on till September 17. Ganesh Chaturthi commemorates the birth of Lord Ganesh and is one of the most prominent Hindu festivals in India. Lord Ganesh is revered as the God of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. He is regarded as the force against barriers and a guiding light in times of darkness. Ganesh Chaturthi is also referred to as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Utsav. Many states including Maharashtra, Telangana and Karnataka celebrate the festival on a large scale.

During Ganesh Chaturthi, many families welcome Ganesha idols at home. These clay idols become the central aspect of rituals and celebrations. Devotees bow down to seek blessings from it and organise pujas.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2024: Things To Do

Many Ganesh worshippers enjoy making their idols with faith and passion. However, they must note that a Ganesha idol is not complete without a mukut or a crown. To ensure good luck and fortune, add a majestic mukut to the idol.

When welcoming Bappa home, drape a red chunri or cloth over your Ganesha idol.

The auspicious orientations for doing the sthapana (installation) of the Lord Ganesh idol are east, west and northeast.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2024: Things Not To Do

It is important to note that Lord Ganesha’s trunk should not point to the right, as this signifies his stubborn attitude or difficult times. Always place the trunk to the left, which indicates success and positivity.

After Ganesh sthapana, avoid eating onion, garlic and other tamilic foods. Cook only Satvik delicacies and offerthem to Lord Ganesha first.

The house should not be left empty during Ganesh Chaturthi and one family member should always be at home, with the deity.

Do not close the main door during sthapana.

Never immerse the Lord Ganesha idol without doing aarti and puja.
