To ignite students’ interest in space science, the Vikram Sarabhai Space Gallery, an initiative of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, will be opened at the Science Park in Kakkanad on Saturday. A movie on the nation’s space initiative will be screened which will be followed by a seminar on space science. The event aims to nurture students’ interest and help them delve deeper into the space world.
The space gallery will be inaugurated by VSSC director P S Veeraraghavan at 10.30 am. Benny Behanan MLA will preside over the function. Students of all schools from Class V to Class XII can participate.
“We plan to conduct seminars frequently along with other programmes, and will select students from the list provided by each school,” said Indira Rajan, chief executive officer, Science Park and general secretary, Kerala CBSE Managements Association.
Models of satellites, posters of rockets, communication satellites, Chandrayan and space centres have been displayed.
Dr A P J Abdul Kalam has structured the modules for the seminars on topics in space science to be held twice or thrice a month, she said.
With the opening of the gallery, students will be made aware of the scope and challenges in the field of space science. They will be acquainted with research and new developments and have a vision of the future.
The Science Park which is still in its infancy will have pavilions of history of science, exhibits and artifacts, interactive science kiosks, science play centres, animation theatre, amphitheatre and the like.
A seminar complex with attendant facilities, outdoor science garden with huge models and exhibits are also planned which will be an ideal platform for students to conduct experiments. The Defence, DRDO, VSSC and major industries would offer support. A lot more needs to be done at the SSM.
Municipal chairman P I Muhammad Ali, Tom Jose, MD of Kochi Metro Rail Ltd, and J Geetha, Deputy Director of VSSC, will be present. Indira Rajan will give the introductory address.
