A head constable of Manipur Police has sparked a major controversy by confessing that he had killed an unarmed former People's Liberation Army (PLA) terrorist Sanjit Meitei in a fake encounter in 2009.
The constable, Herojit Singh, has claimed that he had killed the unarmed youth at the behest of his superiors. The CBI has also taken cognisance of the confessions made by the policeman, saying they would reopen the file if the claims are found to be true.
But what's the story of the youth, Sanjit Meitei, who was killed in the alleged fake encounter? Here's a look:
Sanjit Meitei was a former cadre of terrorist group PLA, who was arrested in 2000, only to be freed later. Following which, he continued his stint with the group for the next six years.
In 2006, he reportedly walked out of the outfit citing health reasons. A year later, in 2007, Meitei was again taken into custody under charges of National Security Act.
After his release a year later, he began leading a normal life with his family. Meitei even took up a job as an attendant in a local private hospital.
Despite leading a normal life after his release, Meitei was required to make periodic appearances before the court for sometime.
However, this remained shortlived as in 2009, he was shot dead in Manipur by police personnel at a market place in Imphal. Meitei's family has since been alleging that he was killed in cold blood in a fake encounter.
Though the CBI had filed a chargesheet in the case, naming the police personnel allegedly involved in the encounter, the case did not reach a conclusion. But with the fresh revelations in connection with the case, the CBI may take the case further.
