Freeze N-deal, respect democracy: CPI(M)
The CPI(M) has asked the government to respect the parliamentary democracy.

New Delhi: The CPI(M) on Wednesday has asked the government to respect the parliamentary democracy by not making the 123 agreement operational. The party General Secretary Prakash Karat said that the Government's argument that the sense of the House could be taken only after completion of the process would mean that Parliament has no say whatsoever except to have an academic debate on the issue.

With the nuclear debate on top of the agenda, the CPI (M) leaders in both Houses sought a categoric assurance from the government not to ensue the deal taking into account the majority opposition to it, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the 'sense of the House' could not be taken until the process was completed.

"At every stage despite the majority view against the deal, the government has proceeded ahead," Karat said in an article in the forthcoming issue of party organ 'People's Democracy'.

The top CPI (M) leader maintained that it was crucial for the government to take into account the verdict of Parliament on the 123 agreement and in consequence freeze it. With the Lok Sabha debate on the deal, it was an established fact that the majority was against the deal. He continued to say that almost 60 per cent of the total membership spoke against the deal. He added that these included Left parties, NDA, UNPA and others like the BSP.

Karat said that the debate and discussion in Rajya Sabha made UPA governments isolation on the nuclear agreement evident.
