The 62nd-ranked German hasn't played since March, when he withdrew from his match against Novak Djokovic at Key Biscayne because of a groin injury. He missed the French Open and Wimbledon. His withdrawal from the US Open was announced on Thursday.
The 30-year-old Mayer's best Grand Slam finish was twice reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. He has never advanced past the third round at Flushing Meadows.
Mayer has been ranked as high as 18th.
