Beijing: China reported five more infections on Monday in an outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease Encephalitis B in a northern city which has so far killed 19, state media reported.
The city of Yuncheng in Shanxi province said the total number of infections since the first case was reported on July 13 had risen to 65 from Sunday, the Xinhua News Agency said, citing the city's health bureau.
Measures such as public education campaigns and the stepping up of vaccinations in affected and surrounding areas have brought the outbreak under control, Xinhua said, quoting the bureau's head Zhou Ying.
Zhou said many of the people infected by the disease live in rural areas on the flood plains of the Yellow River, where sanitation is poor and mosquitos breed easily, the report said.
The disease causes an inflammation of membranes around the brain. Symptoms include high fever, seizures and headaches.
