Kathmandu: A major fire at the godown of Surya Tobacco Company, the largest Indian joint-venture operating in Nepal, on Wednesday destroyed 40 truckloads of cigarettes and caused huge damage to its property.

The exact cause of the fire is not yet known, they said.

Scores of security personnel from Nepal Army and Nepal Police were dispatched to the factory to bring the fire under control.

The fire broke out at 1.30 am on Wednesday, sources said.

The fire has destroyed packed cigarettes worth millions that were stored in the space of 9,000 square metres in the first floor godown of the five-storey building, Ekantipur.Com reported.

The security guards of the factory were asleep when the fire broke out, the police said.
