Ex-coach hasn't lost hope on Sania
Eleven months after she reached a singles ranking of 31, Sania's career is at a new low, falling as low as 54.

New Delhi: Francesca Schiavone scripted the end of Sania Mirza's campaign in the US Open at Flushing Meadows in the second round.

Eleven months after she achieved her career high singles ranking of 31, Sania's career is at a new low, with her WTA ranking falling as low as 54.

Coach of the Japanese Davis Cup team Bob Brett helped Sania climb from 480 to 31 last year. Clearly he is in a good position to explain why Mirza has had an ordinary second year on tour.

"It’s much easier to make that move going up and staying there and even moving higher. But quite often in the second year there are some issues. I think she has improved in some parts of the game but hasn’t translated into success," Brett says.

Bob believes Sania can make it to the top 20 soon, if she focusses as much on strengthening her strong points as her weaknesses.

"It’s playing the big points the right way and then having the confidence to get those wins. I think the wins will come probably when she plays some lower level tournaments to get the confidence back," Brett adds.

Sania’s journey in the WTA charts was rather topsy-turvy, seeing her rise from No 104 to No 31, then back down to 54.

She has shown flashes of brilliance, only to disappoint in the past few months. Maybe it’s high time she seeks help from one of her former coaches Bob Brett, who it seems, is pretty confident that she has got what it takes to reach the top.
