New Delhi: After BJP’s saffron mascot Yogi Adityanath dragged the ‘caste’ of Lord Hanuman into the poll slugfest last week, calling him a Dalit Tribal during an election rally in Rajasthan, Dalits in Agra have demanded that the management of all Hanuman temples across the country be handed over to them.
Wearing ‘janeu’ (sacred thread) and shouting slogans like ‘Dalit devta Hanuman ki jai’ (long live Dalit god Hanuman), over 30 Dalit reached the Hanuman temple at Langre ki Chowki on Delhi-Kanpur Highway on Thursday, reported Hindustan Times.
Congress leader Amit Singh, who let the group to the temple on Thursday morning, said that all Hanuman temples should be handed over to the Dailt Community as Lord Hanuman part of it.
In a bid to please Dalits to caste to vote for the candidate fielded by the BJP from Alwar, the UP chief minister, known for his polarising speeches, had on November 28 said that Hanuman was a Dalit tribal. “Hanuman was a tribal, a forest dweller and was deprived. Bajrang Bali worked to connect all Indian communities together, from north to south and east to west. This was his resolve as it was Lord Ram’s wish. Just like him, we should also not rest till we fulfil that wish,” Adityanath had said during a poll rally in Malpura constituency.
