VELLORE: The crackdown on encroachments that began on Tuesday, continued with residential complexes being demolished at Anna Salai on Thursday.The demolished houses were built over an area of 2,000 sq ft. Sources said notices were issued to these houses after they were identified as encroachments.Temporary encroachments were removed in 550 shops in two separate places near Vellore old bus stand and at Arni Road on Tuesday. Following this Corporation Mayor Karthiyayini had complained that developmental works were being delayed by encroachments. Hence, temporary encroachments along the main roads such as Anna Salai, Arni Road, Katpadi Road, Makhan junction, Vellore old and new bus stand areas were being removed, as the first step, she stated. Officials concentrated on Anna Salai on Thursday. The encroachments are being cleared in order to address traffic woes and to carry out development work at the corporation area, for the purpose of increasing revenue, officials said.The first phase of the clearing operations ended on Thursday and the second phase would begin from Monday.A corporation official said over 100 houses are suspected to have encroached with most of them near Nicholson canal area.RDO Jayashree said surveyors would begin measuring land and mark encroached areas during the three-day holidays. From Monday, the clearing operations would continue. First preference will be given to areas which have been encroached for commercial purposes. After this, encroachments near Nicholson canal would be cleared.
