New Delhi: Two of Serbia's star players won the singles titles at the Pacific Life Open. Novak Djokovic and Ana Ivanovic made it an unforgettable day for Serbian tennis in California.
There must have been some indication of Novak Djokovic playing Mardy Fish, the man who upstaged the World No. 1 Roger Federer in the semi-final.
But the first set made Djokovic look very much at ease, he won it 6-2. The unseeded Fish was not to be discounted just yet. He made a valiant effort to take the second 7-5.
But the Australian Open victory has definitely boosted Djokovic's confidence. He did not let Fish get away from there on, giving away only three games in the decider.
"It's always great to win a Masters Series event, of course it's one of the strongest events in tennis where all the best players in the world play. I had a great run even last year, I reached the finals, so obviously I really like playing here," Djokovic said after his win.
His female compatriot Ana Ivanovic did not have many problems though. She was playing Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova.
The first set was a no-contest with the World No. 2 winning it 6-4. Kuznetsova had an opportunity to create some pressure when she went up 3-2 in the second set. But Ivanovic gave her no time to settle down, winning the match on a clean winner.
"I'm very happy to have won another title. It's been a great match today. So, I'm very pleased," says the World No. 2.
This victory is probably an indication of the things to come in the near future, and the clear message: watch out for the Serb brigade.
