New Delhi: With Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's family falling prey to the dengue menace, the clear and present danger of the mosquito borne virus cannot be ignored.
And the current dengue scenario has put the country in panic mode. "There's a sense of panic. Any kind of fever is being mistaken as dengue and the people often worry if their platelet count is going to fall," says Dr Anupam Sibal of the Apollo Group.
In most cases, feverish symptoms makes one immediately suspect the worst. "We were afraid it might be dengue, but it turned out to be nothing," says a victim's relative, Anil Maini.
But doctors understand the fear psychosis. Dr Byotra of Sir Gangaram Hospital has been pacifying frantic callers who've been complaining of dengue-like symptoms all through the day.
Here are some tips that you need to remember to take the sting out of dengue -
1. Clean coolers, tanks and even flower vases - these are all prospective breeding grounds for aedes mosquito.
2. If feverish, get a blood test to check platelet count. The normal count is 1.5 to 4 lakh cubic mm.
3. If the platelet count is closer to 1 lakh, get another test done to see if the count has declined further. (Declining platelet count is one of the signs of dengue).
4. When feverish, do not take disprins as it further reduces the platelet count.
So, if you have feverish symptoms, don't neglect it. Have a crocin or any other paracetamol. Get a blood test done and then consult your family physician. With some basic precautionary measures, tackling dengue will not be such a tough challenge.
