The non-availability of six tmcft of Cauvery water as per the interim order of the Cauvery tribunal has led to a loss of `32 crore to the agricultural sector, Chief Minister N Rangasamy said in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Speaking at the meeting of Cauvery River Authority, the chief minister urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who chaired the meeting, to issue appropriate orders to devise the “distress sharing formula” taking into account ground realities like failure of south-west monsoon and non-realisation of Cauvery water as per the tribunal’s orders.

According to  the interim order of the Cauvery  Water Dispute Tribunal, the Karaikal region would get 6 tmcft of water annually spread over June to July.

“We expect the chairperson will issue appropriate orders in the matter of regulation of flows so as to make use of Cauvery water realistically by the lower riparian states of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the crucial months of June to September,” Rangasamy said.

He also thanked the prime minister for convening the meet.

The chief minister pointed out that the Karaikal region, situated 135 km south of Puducherry, lies at the tail end of the delta and is entirely dependent upon the Cauvery water for agricultural and domestic needs.

He added that the non-availability of water was seriously affecting the cultivation of “kuruvai crop” and “sambha crop” on time.

“Those whose livelihoods depend on agriculture in the region have also been greatly affected,” Rangasamy said.

He noted that it was evident that Cauvery water could not be released as scheduled on June 12 due to the failure of the south-west monsoon and poor storage in Mettur dam.

Rangasamy, however, thanked Tamil Nadu Chief minister J Jayalalithaa for issuing order to open the Mettur dam on June 17.

The Cauvery River Authority meeting was conducted for the first time in nine years.
