The hearing in the defamation case filed by the Tamil Nadu government against actor-turned- politician Vijayakant, in which he was to have appeared in a local court on Thursday, was adjourned to September 20.
The case was posted to that date before the Second Additional Sessions Judge Vanangamudi as the presiding officer is on leave. City Public Prosecutor M L Jegan said the DMDK leader's statement, alleging that government was spending funds for advertisements in the media from the public exchequer, was per se defamatory.
When the case came up for hearing on Thursday, Jegan argued Vijayakant was to have appeared in court but had not turned up even after the order.
Vijayakant's counsel filed a petition to exempt his client from appearing for the day and requested the judge to post the matter with other similar matter, which was to come up on September 20.
