New Delhi: The Commonwealth Games organisers have missed yet another deadline. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had claimed that construction debris piled up on Delhi roads would be removed by August 10 but at many sites debris is still present. Embarrassed by the missed deadline the Delhi Government on Tuesday announced that the debris now needs to be cleared by August 31.
At many of the Commonwealth Games sites dug out mud and debris still lie strewn on the roads. The earlier deadline to remove the debris and clear the construction sites and roads was July 31.
Sheila had directed all civic agencies to strictly comply with the order but to no avail.
The Games have already been mired in numerous controversies, allegations of corruption and delay in meeting deadlines on construction projects.
Corruption allegations have already claimed two senior Commonwealth Games Organising Committee officials. The Commonwealth Games Organising Committee on Monday terminated the services of its tainted joint director general TS Darbari follwoing pleas from Union Sports Ministry.
Darbari, who had been suspended pending an inquiry after his name cropped up in alleged corruption during the Queen's Baton Relay's launch in London, has been told to hand over charge to Additional Director General VK Saxena.
Former deputy director-general Sanjay Mahendroo and head of the accounting department M Jeychandran have also been sacked. The Executive Board has also terminated the contract of Melbourne-based Sports Marketing and Management (SMAM) for "non-performance".
The UPA Government has already been facing the heat on corruption allegations in Commonwealth Games by the Opposition.
