CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the TN government and its revenue officials to strictly protect the gramanatham lands from being misused, particularly for commercial purposes.“The pathetic situation prevailing in this part of the globe is that ignoring the fact that the gramanatham land is a common village land, some greedy persons like the writ petitioners are indulging in activities that are purely commercial in nature,’’ said a division bench comprising Justices E Dharma Rao and M Venugopal.    The bench was allowing a writ appeal from the Chennai Corporation challenging the orders dated August 9, 2007 of a single judge permitting Kences Constructions Pvt Limited at T Nagar and South India Corporation Agencies Ltd to construct silt plus four floors on a land at Virugambakkam.Originally, the companies applied for buildng plan permission and the CMDA granted it in August 2005. However, the Corporation refused permission, as a portion of the land was gramanatham. It also said that it had approached the authorities concerned to cancel the pattas issued erroneously in favour of the construction company.
