Jharkhand has experienced a spurt in rape incidents this year, but police on Thursday attributed it to registration of old complaints and rising consciousness among the people.
"Under the direction of the High Court, a massive drive to register all (old) court complaint cases involving rape has been undertaken resulting in the rise of cases," Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar said here.
"Similarly, rising consciousness among the masses has contributed to avoidance of non-reporting or suppression (of cases). This will be beneficial in prosecution of such offenders which will act as a deterrent," Kumar said, while stating that a total of 500 rape cases were reported till May 31 this year.
The five-month figure of rape incidents is significantly higher than previous year's 328 and 292 in 2011 during the corresponding period. Murder cases witnessed were fewer till May this year, registering 809 compared to 853 and 837 in 2012 and 2011 respectively.
There were 24 cases under the Explosives Act, 212 cases under Arms Act, 3,300 theft cases, 229 robbery cases, 20 kidnapping for ransom and 75 dacoity cases till May 31 this year, the DGP said quoting police records.
"The figures clearly indicate a declining trend in major heads of crime," the DGP said.
