Mumbai: National Students Union of India (NSUI) activists took to the streets on Wednesday to protest against undue fee charged by the SIES college administration in Mumbai.
NSUI have alleged that the college management has been overcharging the students and has amassed over Rs one crore illegally.
While the college management have promised to look into the issue, the students union has demanded a total refund of the fee.
Excess fees to the tune of Rs 1500-2000 annually per student has been charged against the Mumbai university regulations.
"They have been overcharging the students, we want the money to be refunded, even the university is not doing anything," Sadaf Aboli, president, NSUI, said.
After a huge struggle with the police, the representatives of the students union were finally allowed to meet the principal of the college.
But the principal has asked for some time to consult the management of the college before taking any decision on the issue of refunds.
"They have not given me any prior intimation. Give me some time to look into this matter," Dr Harsha Mehta, principal of SIES college, said.
Meanwhile NSUI claims that there are 420 other colleges in Mumbai who are indulging in similar practices like overcharging students under various heads despite the fact that the university has laid down strict rules on the fee structures.
The union now plans to approach the Mumbai University and further intensify its campaign if their demands are not met.
